I saved $10,000, lost it, accumulated debt, and rebuilt my finances. Here’s the story behind TopMoneyGrove and the lessons I learned along the way.
Have you ever felt like you were doing everything right with your money, only to watch everything fall apart anyway?
That was me.
And it’s exactly why TopMoneyGrove exists.
For years, I had the idea of creating a personal finance website in the back of my mind. I wanted to help people improve their financial literacy because, honestly, I spent much of my life wishing someone had done the same for me.
Growing up in a lower-income household, I saw financial stress firsthand. Bills, debt, and money worries weren’t abstract concepts. They were everyday realities. Unfortunately, nobody ever taught me how to build wealth, manage debt, or create a financial plan.
Like many people, the only formal financial education I received was a required high school personal finance class. While it covered the basics, I left feeling completely unprepared for real-world money decisions.
So I started figuring things out on my own.
During high school, I worked full-time whenever I could and managed to save $10,000 before heading to college. At the time, I had very few expenses, so nearly every dollar I earned went straight into savings.
When I discovered dividend investing, I became fascinated by the idea of creating passive income. I invested my savings into dividend-paying stocks, including some higher-yield investments that, looking back, involved more luck than skill.
Before long, those investments were generating around $300 per month in dividends.
At 18 years old, that felt incredible.
I thought I had cracked the code.
I thought I was ahead of the game.
I thought I was doing exactly what all the personal finance experts said I should do.
Then reality showed up.
College was significantly more expensive than I expected, and like many students, I underestimated how quickly everyday spending adds up. Between tuition, living expenses, and having an active social life, my savings slowly disappeared.
Eventually, I sold my investments.
Then I spent the money.
All of it.
Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, life threw another curveball my way.
Shortly after graduating, I developed appendicitis. Because I was no longer covered by my student health insurance, I suddenly found myself facing nearly $10,000 in medical debt.
And unfortunately, that wasn’t my only financial mistake.
Terrified of student loans and influenced by all the horror stories I’d heard growing up, I convinced myself that using credit cards was the smarter option.
It wasn’t.
Interest charges piled up faster than I expected, and before long, I was staring at a level of debt that felt overwhelming.
I felt stuck.
I felt embarrassed.
Most of all, I felt like I should have known better.
That period became my breaking point.
But it also became my turning point.
Instead of continuing to avoid my finances, I decided to confront them head-on. I built a budgeting spreadsheet from scratch and started tracking every dollar I spent.
It wasn’t glamorous.
In fact, it was frustrating at first.
But week after week, something started to change.
By spending just a few minutes reviewing my transactions, I began noticing patterns. Small purchases I barely thought about were quietly draining my income. Habits that once felt insignificant suddenly became impossible to ignore.
For the first time, I wasn’t guessing where my money was going.
I knew.
And that knowledge changed everything.
My spending became more intentional. My savings started growing again. Most importantly, I stopped feeling powerless.
That’s when TopMoneyGrove truly began.
This website isn’t run by someone who has always been financially successful. It’s built by someone who made mistakes, accumulated debt, learned difficult lessons, and decided to keep moving forward anyway.
My goal isn’t to promise overnight wealth or secret investing tricks.
My goal is to help everyday people improve their financial literacy, take control of their money, and build a path toward financial freedom one smart decision at a time.
Here, I’ll be sharing the wins, the setbacks, the lessons, and occasionally the “wow, that was a terrible idea” moments that shaped my personal finance journey.
Because if someone like me can go from confusion and debt to confidence and control, then you can too.
Welcome to TopMoneyGrove.
Let’s turn those financial tumbleweeds into treasure trees, one smart move at a time.
